Sidibe gives a touching and inspirational performance. She already being called a likely 2010 Golden Globe awards, as well as, an Oscar nominee, for her roll as Claireece “Precious” Jones, who is a 16 year old teenager living in Harlem, who confronts great obstacles in her life. Claireece is an illiterate, obese 16 year old teenager, who’s been abused by her mother (played by Mo'Nique) and raped by her father, and is pregnant with her second child by her father.
The movie tackles a very dark subject matter, yet, is ultimately a triumphant story of redemption. Sidibe has always wanted to be a psychologist and said in an interview that her interest in psychology gave her the insight into her downtrodden, but hopeful character. She read about the psychology of the abused, and her performance highlights the hunched, defensive body language and guarded expression of a person who has survived such a trauma.
Sidibe 26, is originally from the Bedford Stuyvesant section, in Brooklyn, New York, but was raised in Harlem. She was a full-time student at Mercy College and a part-time customer service representative in New York, when she heard about the casting call for the film. 400 women auditioned for the roll, and even though Sidibe didn’t think she would get the part, she cut classes to audition anyway. Within an hour after auditioning, she got a call from director Lee Daniels and was catapulted from obscurity to stardom over night; appearing on various well know talk shows from Opera to Conan O’Brien.
Sidible has never acted or taken any acting lessons in her life, yet the heart wrenching performance she delivered, made it seem like she's been a professional actress for decades. To play the role, she had to enter into a nightmare; shut down her confidence and speak in a way that characterized life of her character. She shared that, the press has tried to associate her with Claireece-being downtrodden, over weight and unpopular in school and in life. But the truth is, Gabby is bubbly and giggly, awesome and comfortable in her body. She said, friends and family members continually pressure her about her weight and don’t realize how they could be hurting her feelings. But, she said, “I have learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night, and I wake up with myself every morning, and if I don’t like myself, there’s no reason to even live the life. I love the way I look. I’m fine with it. And if my body changes, I’ll be fine with that too.”
