Heap's mother an art therapist and her father a construction rock retailer, separated when she was just twelve years old. She begun writing songs when she was thirteen. She is classically trained on several instruments including the piano, cello and clarinet. Heap is an extremely talented artist who also taught herself to play the guitar and drums. Her musical style is heavily produced and arranged pop, incorporating elements of rock, Euro-pop, dance, and electronica with the use of manipulated electronic sounds. "I just love crafting and shaping sounds. Actually, many of the sounds that I work with start off as organic instruments: the guitar, piano, clarinet, etc. But I do love the rigidity of electronic drums... I would record live drums, and then I would spend a day editing them to take the life out of them. I like to breathe my own life into these sounds, and I do try to keep the air in the music. Some people think electronic music is cold, but I think it has more to do with the people listening than the actual music itself."

Growing up Heap attended boarding school. From there she studied at the BRIT School of Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon, South London. At the age of 18, heap signed her first record contract with the independent label, Almo Sounds. Heap’s career was challenged when Almo Sounds cut funding for UK promotion and gave her a deadline to deliver songs for a second album. After she did, it was determined that the songs lacked hit potential, which left her career in limbo for a while. Almo Sounds was sold to Universal and Heap was dropped from the label.
In December 2001, Frou Frou became a formal duo through an equal partnership between Heap and Acacia band member Guy Sigsworth. Both make equal contributions to the writing, arrangements, production and the instrumental performance with Heap handling all of the vocals. In August 2002, they released the "Details" album and singles "Breathe In", "It's Good To Be In Love", and "Must Be Dreaming", which was received with critically acclaim, but did not achieve the commercial success that was hoped for.
After an extensive promotional tour of the UK, Europe and the U.S., in 2003, the duo were told that their record label, Island Records would not be picking up the option for a second album for Frou Frou, but wanted to sign Heap as a solo artist-she declined. However, feeling that she was seen by the press as just a singer for Frou Frou and feeling an increasing desire to be the lead producer of her own work, the duo agreed to split. Heap and Sigsworth remained friends and came back together for a temporary re-union in 2003.
