While Whitaker has experienced success, fame, amazing love and the best of life; she's also experienced some of the sorrows of life as well. And the amazing thing about her is that she's grown through it all, and gained a perspective that's inspiring, encouraging, strengthening and most of all: life giving.....
Whitaker was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and graduated from the University of Louisiana, Monroe, with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. As a student, Whitaker got involved with beauty pageants as a way of getting scholarship money to help pay for her education, because her had mother passed away during her freshman year in college. Six years after Whitaker entered her first pageant; she won the title of Miss Louisiana, and was crowned by Vanessa Williams. From there she went to the Miss America Pageant, but that was two months after Vanessa Williams had to give up her title. Whitaker was asked to comment, but had nothing but good things to say in reference to Vanessa Williams.
Whitaker always knew that she wanted to sing, but also knew that she needed to work. So she went into nursing, which was as a natural thing for her to do. "My parents were very nurturing caring Christian loving people. They raised us in a devoutly Baptist home. They were involved in Bible school; and my father was president of the choir and the deacon board. We were in church Monday through Sunday. They were just good people and great examples for me and my family--always giving back, always helping others just because it was the right thing to do. When you have good examples, it validates you, and gives you something to aspire to that’s already in your DNA. Nursing for me was a natural extension of that--to heal, and to be with people. I used my singing.  I would sing my patients to sleep while giving them a back rub.  There's healing in singing; there's healing in touching."
Whitaker eventually moved to Los Angeles with a nursing company, and got the chance to pursue her singing career while making a living. A dear friend of hers got her a singing gig at a club, and introduced her to Don LaFontaine, (the voice over king), who she married in October, of 1988. "We created the most wonderful, blessed life together, and had two beautiful daughters. Don’s career flourished and my career grew. When they handed me my first daughter Skye, it was a pivotal paradigm shift in my focus.  I could only see her.... I loved....my husband, and we had this great relationship--a great personal spiritual relationship.  But this baby was just...a love I had never known. And I imagined its how God loves us. It’s a consuming love; it’s everything that you want when you look into that face. I was so enamored; I was so in love. I just could not get over how much I loved her."
Nita Whitaker is not only beautiful, she's also extremely talented.  She won "Star Search", appeared in the movie "The Body Guard" with Whitney Houston.  She's shared the stage with Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Celine Dion and countless other celebrities. For Nita, life has been a beautiful experience........

This was an exciting time for Whitaker, and some have even described it as an historical time in her life. "When you’re going for your dream you don't look at what is making history. You're just trying to find your dream--a long way history is being made. It doesn't happen as happen stance; and it's not something that’s in the forefront of your head," said Whitaker in an interview with The World From Here.

"We knew we wanted to have another baby, and along came Lisi with as much love and beauty as Skye did. I just looked at her, and I instantly knew that she was a special being; she had such a groundingness, and such a knowingness. She augmented our life--completed our life. We felt so blessed that we were given two healthy children. Even though Don's career flourished with great demand on his time, he made a point to be a good father. The girls had a beautiful, warm, loving relationship with their dad."
During that time Don was at the top of his gain and had been doing voice over work for movie trailers for about 40 years, announcing more than 5000 movies.  All together he’s announced close to a quarter million movies and TV spots, which earned him the title of the Voice Over King, and the most working actor in the history of the Screen Actors Guild.
"Don was a great teacher; he had a wealth of knowledge and read voraciously.  We had a wonderful, loving relationship that I will always cherish.  There is a part of me that feels lonely and sad, but, my home is filled with his Spirit; his presence is very full here. I miss him.  He was so handsome and dashing in an old-style Hollywood kind of way."

On the anniversary of Don's ascension, his promotion to heaven, Whitaker went to visit her daughters. They found a lake and Whitaker asked the girls to say something about their father. One daughter said, "Thank you dad for raising the bar so high," and the other daughter said, "I am so glad I knew somebody that classy, thank you dad." "Don lived life in a big way, he lived fully and the girls got to witness that in a very positive way--the grandness of life that their dad brought to everything."
Whitaker has experience more love from her husband and family than most people will have the fortune to experience, along with some of the painful realities of life. "Life is made up of triumphs and tragedies. What do you do with that? Do you go in a corner and hide or have a pity party, or do you bask in the pool of gratitude? That's what I have chosen. You have to make a conscious decision to gravitate to any source of positivity that has happened in your life. Surround yourself with people that you love, and then from that; begin to co-create that feeling of love in your life, and that love will branch out and create goodness in your life. When life has dealt you hardship, you have to put yourself back into life. The gift of life is a gift, and a gift of death is light. And for me a tragedy comes to strengthen your faith--to strengthen your resolve to move forward. We have to embrace the good and the bad; it is all part of the journey."

Together they had experienced an incredible ride. They were able to build the dream home they wanted for their family--Whitaker was singing with David Foster and others or working with her husband. "It was a glorious time," said Whitaker. But, one month shy of 20 years of marriage, it was discovered that Don had cancer. They prayed and had others praying, and Don's cancer was eradicated. But, complications from the treatment came up and Don eventually passed on. "We had the most amazing love. I was loved so completely and so holy (wholly). All of my friends would say I want a Don. It wasn't because of Stuff; it was because of how he loved me and how unabashedly we shared our love for each other. It was so very unique and special--we were soul mates.  I was his friend and he was mine. We had this great love, and we loved our children. Family was the most important thing to us.  It was important to cultivate a peaceful and loving home life--a safe place for the children to learn how to fight, how to play and how to share."
